Lend a tool

Submitted by netwiser Sep 18, 2011

As provocative as that title sounds, sharing tools is not only beneficial to you, but also a great way of establishing trust. Have you ever been working at fixing the sink when you realized you needed that special screwdriver with the weird head? You know for a fact that your neighbor has one, but you refused to lend him your chainsaw for his experimental "Rope on a chainsaw" grass-cutting technique and now you are worried he will refuse you as revenge.

There are many upsides to sharing tools among your neighbors. Making a pool of tools for communes (or in this case suburb) allows people to not only avoid having to buy the same tools as everyone else, but also allows you to find that special tool in your time of need. Also, it takes trust to lend a neighbor a tool as he may never return it or constantly forget. As a result, a special bond is created and can be built on. Once that bond is solidified after a few exchanges, it will be unbreakable (unless of course, one party requests the other's chainsaw for the new grass-cutting technique) and there would be no hesitation to lend tools as they know the other will return it.

However, you must know how to trust. As it is a really world, we can't simply execute people who do us wrong. If a neighbor is always miserable and never gives back tools on time or at all, simply keep them out of the circle. Don't allow them into the network of tools that you have established with other neighbors and your problem will be solved. Don't punish all your other neighbors because of what one of them did. By establishing your network, you can build healthy relationships with your new found friends and you can finally fix your sink.
